Canstruction’s intricate food cans sculptures fight hunger

Amalgamating recycled art with a noble act of filling hungry stomachs of the broke is definitely something that we don’t get to see too often. The “Canstruction exhibition” does just that. The competition invites dozens of teams of architects and engineers, who create extraordinary can sculptures to take away the title of Canstruction champions. Last year the Canstruction winner was a piggy-bank sculpture made from 3.024 cans of salmon and 24 cans of tuna, while this year the mosaics of Marylin Monroe and Super Mario, a can-made van and several other astounding creations are battling it out.

As many as 25 teams are trying their luck this year and have transformed nearly 100,000 cans of food into stunning sculptures that are detailed to perfection. The exhibition is on display at the World Financial Center Garden, in New York City. The organizers are not only encouraging visitors to appreciate recycled art, but are also requesting them to donate canned foods like tuna, beans or vegetables. After the exhibition closes on November 22, all the cans will be given to the poor people by City Harvest.
