Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy Limited launched the first ever solar-powered irrigation pump at Kaishar Char village in Savar yesterday. The system developed by converting a 10HP diesel-run irrigation pump on solar power is capable of saving 760MW of electricity and 800 million liters of diesel in a year. The system was jointly inaugurated by Niaz Rahim, Chairman of Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy Ltd., and Shaikh Siraj, Director of Channel-I.

The company claims that though the installation cost of the solar-powered irrigation pump is a little high, it does not require any maintenance costs. This makes it cost-effective over the years it will operate. Nearly Tk 30 lakh has gone into installing the system, which is warranted to serve for 20 years. It will bring down the greenhouse gas emissions by 36 tons annually. The solar pumps that the company aims to install countrywide will save money spent on running diesel-powered pumps. The company pioneered solar pumps in the country in 2004 and has since sold 10 pumps mainly to government and nongovernmental organizations.
