yahoo goes green

In a major step towards reducing the use of conventional sources of energy & promoting awareness in this regard, net giants ‘Yahoo!’ have decided to zero in on their carbon emissions. The company produces 250,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year due to the power requirements it needs to meet. Now that is a staggeringly high amount of greenhouse gases produced.

Earlier this year, the company had promised the world that it would go completely eco-friendly on the energy sources it uses by the end of this year. This was the initial target set for its offices in Brazil & India. The company seems not be backing down from this at all. Yahoo’s director of climate and energy strategy Christine Page tells us that they would use Hydro electric power in Brazil & wind energy in India.

This means that by the end of 2007 Yahoo would achieve ‘zero carbon emissions’ in both Brazil & India. Both the countries have a major stress on their power sources & use fossil fuel to produce the. Yahoo intends to lessen the use by going completely clean in this regard. Yahoo is buying carbon offsets from a wind turbine project in eastern and southern India & has already bought carbon dioxide “offsets” from a hydropower project in the Brazilian village of Catorce de Abril.

This is great commitment shown by the company. This clean up equates to taking 35,000 cars off the roads! That can be nothing but great news for environment. As the British government plans to back off on its renewable energy targets, here is a company showing us the way. Gordon Brown & ministry, I hope you are reading this.
