With no dearth of parking slots for bikes around the campus, a students’ team from Western Washington University has planned to better them with green-roofed canopies. The green remodel will ensure that storm-water runoff is reduced, and the green roofs serve as shelters for numerous insects. As part of the Campus Sustainability Planning Studio, the $20,000 project covers bike racks outside Miller Hall, the Communications Facility and the Haggard Hall bus stop shelter.

Where a single bike rack will efficiently hold 10 bicycles, the entire project promises to provide shelter to 80 bikes at about $1,150 per bike. Currently, the team is looking for financial aid, and it hopes that Western’s board of trustees would hear their call.
