In the effort to extract alternative energy, termite guts and canvas-eating jungle bugs seem no less in their contribution. They could be the key to kicking the oil habit and achieving energy independence. Scientists working on creating ethanol from plant waste are optimistic on it.

There are microbes that can process woody cellulose into sugar. Such microbes are put to work on plant waste - and after a few microbiological twists and turns, the result is ethanol without the corn!
