Who on earth could ever expect Microsoft to build a flying machine for a fanatical event? A team of eight Microsofties has created an airworthy machine named Windows Project Phoenix from recycled windsurfing masts, carbon fiber, nylon rope and other plastics. Created for the Long Beach Red Bull Flugtag, it will sure make some heads turn for its 28-foot wingspan and a Windows-logo color scheme. The workers toiled – designing, building and testing – for over six weeks to construct it on a boathouse on the western shore of Lake Sammamish.

The engine-less plane, which weighs only 75 pounds, asks team members to hoist it onto a PVC pipe made 20-foot-tall cart. After giving it a running start, the team members will shove it off a 30-foot platform over water. The competition, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, will be telecasted in September on Fox Sports Network.
