Tortoises stand in the way of massive Mojave Desert solar project

Unyielding wildlife conservationists might force the Mojave Desert solar project to stop midstream. While the conservationists are resolute on saving some two dozen tortoises inhabiting the desert, the California-based energy firm BrightSource Energy is lingering on with its plea to pursue the massive project. Sierra Club says that the energy firm should not be allowed to build the installation here as it could tamper the pristine habitat of these creatures.

In accordance with the California’s commitment to promote the renewables such as solar, wind and geothermal energy installations, no less than 400,000 mirrors for collecting solar energy were planned on six square miles of land. The successful installation could have empowered BrightSource Energy to power 142,000 homes per year. Moreover, the company sees this particular site best suited for its project because the sun intensity and a tropical climate round the year are the aiding elements for sure.

On the other hand, some government scientists suggest that BrightSource Energy should capture and release the 24 turtles on a 12,000-acre plot of land elsewhere. Since it will cost the latter $25 million, the company should most probably abandon its plans.
