Beijing earned a bad name for its extravagant spending on building the National Aquatics Centre, but now the city is attempting to improve things by revamping this iconic piece of architecture. Built for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Water Cube has recently got a green renewal by Toronto-based planning and design firm Forrec. It was reopened as Asia’s largest indoor water park this Sunday.
The 77,000 sq ft complex features seven-storey slides entitled Aqualoop, Ridehouse, Bullet Bowl and Speed Slide. It also includes a wave pool, a water bar, whirlpools and rides frighteningly called “deep-sea tornadoes”. The ceiling swings down monster jellyfish that offer an unusual view. In addition, the refurbished structure houses shopping arcades, cafes and performance stages. The entry fee for this dynamic space is $29.52 for adults and $23.61 for children.
