Walk passing Times Square, New York became an enthralling experience for the passersby. What left them mesmerized was one of the favorite entries in the 2009 Solar Decathlon, Virginia Tech’s sun-powered Lumenhaus. Put on exhibit at Times Square, the stunning self-sufficient home is named for its “power of light” attributes and architectural references to the BauHaus movement. Standing 4th in the Architecture category, the structure incorporates an automated Eclipse System of extremely insulated translucent panels that filters the light using independent sliding layers.

In order to maximize natural daylight, Lumenhaus uses glass walls. The other green features include gray water recycling, rainwater harvesting, radiant floors, energy-efficient LED lighting, a home management system and a geo-thermal heat pump radiates heat through the concrete floor. In addition to all this, the house can also be controlled by smart phones to allow the owners to switch off any appliance that has been carelessly left operating even when no one is at home.
