With another hurricanes season round the corner and many Haitians still living in temporary shelters a Haiti Canadian musician Luck Mervil has taken the charge to help the earthquake displaced people. His organization Vilaj Vilaj would be building houses using 900 retrofitted shipping containers to build a new village fit for 5,000 inhabitants near Leogane, a coastal city to the west of Port-au-Prince.

Repurposed cargo containers were particularly chosen for their affordability and sturdiness which presented them as the best defense against natural elements in hurricane prone areas. The solid homes built using 40 foot and 20 foot containers would be equipped with 320 square feet of living space, running water and bathrooms. The project is expected to cost around $25 million. These cost effective, easily convertible and weather proof structures would be built by Haitians themselves with the locally available means according to their needs.
