Vancouver is renowned worldwide for its green and serene environs strengthened by several sustainable measures. Reinforcing this reputation is yet another innovative step which is helping Vancouver make it to the headlines once again. Courtesy Liberty Tire Recycling, Vancouver’s Empire Field Stadium has been installed with a sports field that uses 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber made from tires. The new soccer turf uses 22,450 scrap tires and will not have to be watered or treated with pesticides. The crumb rubber used to make the turf also helps improve drainage, and provides cushioning thereby preventing athlete injuries. The sports field built in just 111 days has a seating capacity of 25,000. It will be used for both Canadian Football League team and the city’s new Major League Soccer team which begins in May 2011.
