Relentless rain that flooded much of the East Coast on Sunday and Monday may persist all week, forecasters warned, meaning more havoc on roads, at airports and in basements.

Parts of the Mid-Atlantic region are already swamped by more than a foot of rain. Washington, on Monday, kept several government departments shut down because of the deluge, the capital is facing.

15 states and the District of Columbia got posted with flood warnings and watches, posted on Monday. The weather delayed flights, and led to a mudslide that snarled traffic on the Capital Beltway around Washington.
