Urea-powered fuel cells to power submarines someday

Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh UK are very much sure that urine could replace the use of conventional hydrogen or methanol in traditional fuel cells some day. The team, which includes Dr Shanwen Tao and his research partner Dr Rong Lan, has come up with a prototype fuel cell called Carbamide Power System, which involves cheaper membrane and catalysts, and can run on urea.

The cells, thus produced, will offer a non-toxic, low-cost, easily transportable alternative to high-pressure flammable hydrogen or toxic methanol. Dr Tao thinks that the Carbamide Power System could be used in submarines or power generation in isolated or remote areas.
