Last week, as we let you know about the University of Michigan Solar Car Team’s Infinium solar car and its unmatchable performance at Ford Motor Co.’s Michigan Proving Ground, we had no doubts about its winning the 2010 American Solar Challenge. Surpassing 17 teams at the 1,200-mile race – from Tulsa, Okla. to Naperville, Ill. – in style, the UM’s Infinium solar car won the title for the sixth time. With a top speed of more than 100 mph, the car led every segment of the race.

Adamantly braving traffic setbacks and a 15-minute delay, the vehicle crossed the finish line at around 10 a.m. Sunday, taking 28 hours, 14 minutes, and 44 seconds. Completing the race in 30 hours, 26 minutes, and 53 seconds, the University of Minnesota took second place in the race. The German team Hochschule Bochum took 10 minutes more to finish third.
