Desh Raj SharmaJun 18 2010

Get ready to see homemade human-powered flying machines going past each other at the Ukraine’s first Red Bull Flugtag. No less than 40 short-listed participants from a bunch of 700 applicants will give their original flying machines a whirl at the event. The Red Bull soft drink company and its owner Dietrich Mateschitz are sponsoring this event, and have announced lucrative awards for the winning entries.

The flying machines – constructed entirely of environmentally friendly materials – will be pushed off a six meters-high springboard, placed above the Rusanivsky Canal. A flying machine should not have a wingspan of more than 9.14 meters or a weight (including pilot) in excess of 204 kilograms. While the winner will join the Red Bull Air Race in Lisbon, Portugal, the first runner-up will go to the aviation museum Angar-7 in Saltsburg, Austria. The second runner-up team will win a parachute jump for it.
