The University of Iowa’s staff and students must be jubilant at the reviving of the green project that was put on hold due to lack of funding. However, now the university sees new hopes with the $250,000 technology demonstration grant awarded to it by the state earlier this month. As per the plan, a solar charging station was to be constructed near the Cambus fueling station.

The announcement of a round of grants funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by the Iowa Office of Energy Independence brought new life to the project, whose plan was completed in September 2008. The design of the charging station created by OPN Architects in collaboration with the UI was to extend 180 feet long and provide 57 kilowatts of solar power capability.
The energy generated would be sufficient to power up 47 electric vehicles and during times when vehicles do not require charging, it would go straight to the grid. The $1.28 million project is believed to be the largest solar installation in Iowa. The University’s staff could soon be driving electric trucks that are powered by solar energy.
