An Australian koala has given birth to rare twin cubs in a safari park in south China’s Guangdong Province.
The twin koalas, born in Xiangjiang Safari Park in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, made their first public appearance on April 17, 2007.
Records show that — there have only been one pair of twin koalas in history before. They were born in an Australian college laboratory in 1960. The new-born twins are the only ones naturally-born, and the only pair existing today.
Each of the newly born twin koalas weigh just 220 grams and measure only 10 centimetres in length, are being carefully looked after by their mother Tao Tao in the Xiangjiang Wildlife Park.
The babies need to stay in their mother’s pouch, an external abdominal pocket in which marsupials carry their young, for eight months before being able to live independently. Koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves from that age.
According to a report — Hong Kong pop star duet Twins are contacting the park, and that they are eager to pay the living expenses of the twin koalas in the future.
Twins Festival is organized to celebrate the birth of twin koalas. Exhibition on animal twins will also be held in the park.
