Among the most amazing pavilions at the WORLD EXPO SHANGHAI 2010, the UK’s main pavilion, dubbed as the Seed Cathedral, definitely took center stage as it succeeded in startling eco-aware visitors with its porcupine-like shape. Now the creatives at the London-based Troika, which is a multi-disciplinary art and design practice, plan to erect three new art installations for the amazing pavilion. The immersive and multilayered installations, called GREEN CITY, OPEN CITY and LIVING CITY, will invite visitors to experience the pavilion through all their senses.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office commissioned Troika to create the new art installations, jointly named as Future Plants for UK’s Pavilion at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.

The first installation at one of the walkways will go on to narrate how Nature and the British cities communicate with their past, present and future. The first and second walkways present the UK's longstanding tradition of integrating Nature within the urban environment. The third installation, concluding the pavilion experience, explores possible visions for the future, proposing how nature can be used as a catalyst for urban innovation.

Troika’s installation at the last walkway presents a giant green river of around 200 different plant species for the future of our cities. Each of these plants purify indoor air, remove contaminants from the soil, provide natural treatment for typical urban ailments, resist urban pollution, could be adapted as a food resource within the city, effectively insulate buildings, or provide alternative source of biofuel and plastics.

Certain imaginary plants are also there. This future plant scenario addresses and raises questions about pressing urban issues such as recycling, biofuels and bio-security. You will definitely like the breed of mushrooms that operate as powerful neuronal computers, plants that recover gold from electronic circuits buried in our landfills, and trees that can be used as antennas.
