The road transport in Rockland is sure to rock with the inclusion of 16 hybrid electric buses. With nine more to follow, the green flotilla launched by Transport of Rockland will tot up to 25 very soon. The buses combine a GM-Allison Hybrid EP40 System with regenerative braking for optimized fuel efficiency, low noise and less emissions. A roof-mounted battery gets charged with the kinetic energy generated by the bus in motion and regenerative braking as well.

Highly fuel-efficient buses:
Regenerative braking is responsible for 40 percent of overall fuel economy improvement, which is 20-54 percent more than the conventional buses. The vehicle in motion produces sound equal to any ordinary passenger vehicle. A bike rack is attached to the front of the bus. Besides, provision for deploying a Lift-U ramp for the wheelchair bound passengers is also there.
Federal money assisted the development:
The Federal Transit Administration came up with a $5.5 million grant toward the purchase of these buses. The New York State Department of Transportation and County transportation budgets also lent a hand in the process. Each of the new buses cost about $550,000.
