Trabant to make green return at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The Trabant, once an East German icon, but then scorned for being a smoke-dowdy vehicle, is to be revived as an electric car that suits the eco-conscious of present times. The Trabant that went out of production in 1991 will soon be seen with its new identity, the Trabant NT. Two companies, IndiKar and Herpa Miniaturmodelle, hope to attract inventors with the green credentials of the car to finance its commercial production.

The new Trabant NT will vary from its predecessor in that its former two-stroke engine will be substituted by electric fuel cells and solar-powered air conditioning. The electric car will come equipped with a solar panel roof, connections for mobile phones, iPod and sat-nav. In addition, it will have a gas tank that can be used in case of emergencies, and is expected to have a cruising range of over 150 miles. The eco-friendly and economical Trabant NT will be unveiled in a concept form at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
