Toyota to adorn car interiors with sugarcane-based PET

Desh Raj SharmaOct 14 2010

Extending its rendezvous with environmentally friendly plastics, Toyota now plans to darn its vehicles with a new bio-PET-based Ecological Plastic. It will soon make inroads into Toyota vehicles as liner material or other interior surfaces. The sugarcane-derived stuff provides better heat resistance and durability when compared to other bio-based resins.

Toyota will first use it in the 2011 Lexus CT200h compact hybrid as the luggage compartment liner. Subsequently, the material will be used in seats, carpeting and other parts. Needless to say, it will help Toyota to improve the cost per part performance of petroleum-based plastics through volume production.
