We drink it, bathe in it, soak our lawn in it, and dive into it! Sounds like a riddle, right? But, there’s no prize for guessing it, because I know most of you know what I am talking of. Water is a precious commodity and preserving it is the need of the hour. We have recently celebrated World Water Day to raise awareness about valuable resource. So, what better time to share some coolest water saving ideas with you!

1. Using dishwasher and washing machine when they are full

With the facilities like washing machines and dishwashers at our disposal we generally prefer to do the dishes and clothes frequently. I suggest let them pile up and run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are filled to their total capacity. This process can save about 9000 liters of water monthly. Not only doesn’t this process save water, but also helps save electricity.

Who doesn’t wish to have a lush green lawn! But, keeping it in good shape does cost a lot of water. So, does that mean we will have to sacrifice a healthy lawn to save water? Well, certainly not. All you need to do is use sprinklers to water the plants. Make sure you adjust the sprinklers in a way that only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street. Watering your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler also saves water as it minimizes evaporation.

The world has become hygiene conscious. We do not forget to flush every time we use the toilet. But, have you realized how much water is wasted by doing this? In order to save water avoid unnecessary flushing the toilets. You could also use water saving toilets.

Most of you will agree that we begin our day by wasting water. Wondering how? Well, we all like standing below the shower and enjoy the water dripping down our body. Sadly, this pleasure is achieved at the cost of a large amount of water. So, avoid using a shower for bathing. Try using a bucket instead. If you find it hard to give up on the shower, then switching over to the energy saving shower system would be a better option.

Rainwater harvesting is a very good method of conserving water. It is the process of accumulating and storing of water from the rooftop so that it can be reused. The traditional method of rain water harvesting is the most effective and simple way to conserve the water. The collected water can be used to provide drinking water, water for livestock, water for irrigation, as well as other typical uses. There are three technical methods of rain water harvesting- Catchment, Conveyance and storage.

Spread awareness regarding water conservation is a mind-blowing idea. We could promote the conservation of water through media and wall posters. Educate the people in the rural areas to save the water will also help in saving a large amount of water.

9. Plant during monsoons

We often hear people encourage plantation to save the planet. But, simply planting trees will not help. We will have to make sure they grow up as healthy plants. This would require watering them regularly. So, the best solution is to plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful. This will save on the water need. Also, collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and then reuse it to water your house plants.

10. Keep a check on your water drinking habits

Using small glasses for drinking water would avoid wastage. The smaller the container, the less consumption of water. Make sure you drink water only when you are thirsty.
