Introduction:
Beguiling in their immaculate conception yet solitary in their ancient gaze, we are talking about the enthralling trees – nature’s very own guardians. Looking beyond the aesthetics factor, they are also an all important member of our precious ecological system, in their defining role of producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So let us brace ourselves and be lost in the natural allure of the 8 most fascinating yet perplexing trees in the world.

1. Circus Trees:

Farmer Axel Erlandson has a very special hobby of pruning and grafting trees into exotic and curious shapes, and naming them – Circus Trees. The above image is a “Basket Tree“, and it was achieved by planting six Sycamore trees in a circular pattern and then affixing them together in a unique diamond pattern.

2. Giant Sequoias – General Sherman:

Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are only native to Sierra Nevada, California and are generally considered as the world’s largest trees in terms of volume. The giant even among them is the General Sherman, named after the prominent American Civil War General. This hulking titan has a height of 83.8 meters, 1486 cubic meters of volume and is over 6000 tons in weight! Well as if that was not enough, this tree is also estimated to be over 2200 years old!

3. Montezuma Cypress – The Tule Tree:

This remarkably large Montezuma Cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) situated near Oaxaca, Mexico has a height of 58 meters and an exceptional trunk diameter of 11.3 meters, which by the way is a world record. As a matter of factm it is so much a part of the celebrated local culture that once, when in 1994, the tree showed signs of drying up, an extensive watering program was undertaken to revitalize the tree.

4. Divi-divi Tree – A tree that bows:

The national tree of Curacao, these Divi-divi trees can grow up to 9 meters and can entirely bend at 90 degrees due to the trade winds. This gives us a bizarre impression of some gross and capacious jawed monster waiting to hungrily devour its helpless prey.

5. Sunland Baobab – a tree with a bar:

Yes you have read that perfectly right. The Sunland Baobab in Sunland Farm, Limpopo, South Africa fantastically houses a bar and a wine cellar inside its hollowed trunk which can accommodate up to 20 people. Not only that, it is also the widest of its species and is reckoned to be more than 6000 years old!

6. Baobabs of Madagascar:

Though these big trees remain leafless for most part of the year, the specimens exhibit a kind of sturdy, rotund trunk that is actually fire resistant and can also store up to 120,000 liters of water. Some of them are shaped naturally and rather exotically like tea pot and skulls, and some of them even carry residential units in their large trunks!

7. Tree of Life, Bahrain:

A mesquite tree that has utterly baffled us for four centuries – well the reason is pretty simple, the Tree of Life (Sharajat-al-Hayat) has been there in the middle of the desert for eons, yet without any substantial availability of water. And its curious lushness has even convinced many local people that its exact spot was the actual Garden of Eden!

8. Chandelier Tree – a tree where cars can pass through:

The Wawona Tunnel Tree was a giant sequoia tree in Yosemite National Park, USA which had a height of 69 meters and a whole base trunk circumference of 27 meters. But the most spectacular feature of this 2300 year old tree was the tunnel that was cut through its base in 1881, for facilitating vehicular traffic. Unfortunately, in 1969, the giant fell because of 2-ton load of snow.
