While some researchers rely on sporadically non-polluting, time-honored practices to tackle the ongoing power crunch, others suggest making self-charging vehicles and gadgets. Resorting to the latter option, Engineer Zaina Al-Baytar, a researcher at Damascus University in Syria, has designed a solar-powered vehicle having solar panels attached to roof. These panels provide much-needed succor to the electric engine and keep it going for 200 kilometers on a single recharge at a top speed of 80 km/h.

This is just the beginning, since it will serve as a prototype for future vehicles, says Dr. Samieh Al-Jabi, the project's main supervisor. It’s sure to be received well by local and international car manufacturers, he adds.
