South Chicago will soon see a site specific passive solar residential tower erecting to offer best quality lifestyle to the inhabitants. Dubbed the “Solstice on the Park Tower”, the 26-story building eyes LEED Silver certification with its green credentials. In order to significantly reduce heat gain in summer and maintain solar exposure in the winter, the structure uses a tilted glazing on the southern face, which is angled to 71 degrees.
Designed by Studio Gang Architects, the tower incorporates 145 units stacked in phases of four stories to accommodate the angled face, offices, a community room, conference space and gardens. Located adjacent to Jackson Park, the structure flaunts other green features like a green roof, rainwater catchment, passive cooling and an aggressive IAQ profile. I must admit the building definitely holds the potential to become a landmark for Chicago.
