Students in Zumba protect the misty forests and water source

The youth have always brought on a tinge of freshness to any concept, be it in social services or environmental issues. This was probably what Conservation Fellow Luis Lopez Jaramillo thought for coming up with the eco club named ‘Guardians of Nature’. A bunch of students have valiantly taken it upon themselves to protect the breathtaking misty cloud forests of Ecuador. A call was made for students from different secondary schools of Zumba to come together and form eco clubs after the commencement of the ‘Rare Pride Campaign’ to protect the local watershed.

The eco club ‘Guardians of Nature’ accommodates students from different secondary schools throughout Zumba. Lopez Jaramillo said that it was started with the intention of getting school students to have more concern about the environment and to start protecting it in their own way and also to prevent them from wasting precious time in internet cafes playing video games.

This group of pioneers consist of both teens and preteens who look out to protect their environment and learn to respect it while simultaneously taking an active part in the ‘Rare Pride Campaign’ which works on the threats faced by the San Andres Watershed, the primary water source for the city of Zumba. The types of threats include fires, pollution and logging.

The eco-club functions more or less like a scout or guides club. Progress and growth in the club depend largely on individual advancement and endeavours. Only students with good grades are allowed to be a part of the defending team. Those who are found to have fallen back on their quarterly evaluation scores are allotted tutors who will help them pull up their socks and get back on track while getting them more involved in the campaign. Students are awarded with badges of honor as they advance up each level of the eco club.
