Ramon Knoester (the brain behind Recycled Island), Judith Egberink and Gerben Vos propose to convert an abandoned factory site in Maastricht, the Netherlands, into an apartment complex and a new L-shaped building. The initial designs validate that the construction, which promises to be green, will include use of eco technologies, like a green roof (also, green balustrades), rainwater harvesting, and south-facing solar panels on glasshouses.

The parking garage will feature extra voids in its roof for natural daylight penetration and ventilation. All well-insulated units will rely on Maastricht district heating for keeping warm during winters. The existed factory wall remains as it was earlier, but with recycled plastic windows included. The nearby street-facing façade will have superior sound insulation.

A collective garden has been designed right in the center of the plot to keep both kids and adults engaged. Most of the housing units are linked to the inner garden on the ground floor for maximum physical connection between the housing units and the garden.
