Capable of overpowering Earth’s protective magnetic field, the predictable solar maximum may disrupt communications systems and power grids sometimes during the 2012 London Olympics. Author and astronomer Heather Couper says that this turmoil could send billions of tons of solar matter towards the Earth and can seriously affect it for good.
