Officials from the city of Elgin with Waste Management have unveiled a smart garbage can that will lead to a green future. The green garbage can takes power from the sun to automatically compact trash. However, what is even more interesting is the fact that whenever the compactor is full, it sends a signal to garbage crew saying "Come pick me up."

The new compactor has a capacity to hold five times the amount of trash a conventional similar sized trash bin would accommodate. The extra holding capacity allows the disposal crews to collect the waste from the bin weekly rather than traveling every day to dispose of it. It saves on the fuel and carbon-emissions associated with driving and bringing the waste daily. The smart bin’s daily energy requirement is equal to the amount of energy required to make a piece of toast, while for a week it can do with the amount required to brew a pot of coffee. The cost of this amazing composter is $4,000.
