Solar-powered curtains automatically control sunlight and shade

compliant shading enclosure

The sun often leaves you irritated by making you draw and open the curtains by playing hide and seek. What if there was something that could automatically open or close curtains depending on the temperature. Well, the Compliant Shading Enclosure concept does just that. Designed by Brent Vander Werf, this solar powered curtain creates a movable mechanism within the air-gap of a glass enclosure to regulate the amount of sun, shade and shadow that comes into a window.

This innovative shading system utilizes a bi-metal element that is bonded to high expansion and low expansion alloys. Whenever the temperature changes even slightly it makes the alloys produce an opposing force, which further causes the element to deform and rotate. This way when the sun shines brightly, the curtains are drawn back and when it hides behind the clouds, the curtains are drawn in. In addition, the system does not require any maintenance or user input once installed, and by adjusting the parameters of the alloys, the mechanism can suit a variety of climates.
