At the annual New England Middle School Science Bowl in the University of Connecticut, the focus definitely shifted from hydrogen fuel cell to solar power. This year, the Pomfret Community School kids emerged as winners at the event, thanks to their solar-powered racecar made from balsa wood that featured roof-mounted solar panels. The car was ‘no bigger than a sheet of paper’.

The tiny car – made by Olivia Sheldon, Sydney Fisher, Megan Feragne, Jacqueline Low and Caroline Schad – followed a neatly threaded fishing line. The car also featured a miniature solar-powered motor, connected to the rear wheels.
