Skagen ØKOntor is Norway’s most energy-efficient office building

Engineers from Ramboll UK in Bristol and Pollen Architecture in Austin, Texas, have designed Norway’s most sustainable office building, dubbed Skagen ØKOntor. Parading a variety of green features like roof-mounted Quiet Revolution wind turbines, solar shading, insulated shutters having LED lights on their inside surfaces to mimic daylight, and seawater free cooling, the building uses only 72 kWh/m2/yr (Grade A energy rating as per TEC2007 Norwegian building directive).

While four Quiet Revolution wind turbines offer 24.000 kWhr of clean energy (10% of the building’s energy demand), the insulated shutters brings down the yearly demand by 15%. Seawater serves a dual purpose. Where it’s used for heating via water-cooled heat pumps, it also chills the building by seawater free cooling. An air heat recovery system, natural ventilation, green roof surfaces and wastewater treatment facility add to the building's green credentials.

The project’s overall CO2 footprint is lowered utilizing a structural system of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel walls and floors. Kebony, a Norwegian wood product, is used in making the building's exterior and insulated shutters.
