The Sign Post Forest came into existence in 1942, when Carl Lindley was ordered to repair the sign that was damaged by a bulldozer. It was then that he decided to personalize the job by adding a sign pointing to his hometown, Danville, Illinois. Ever since, many people added different signs, transforming the site into an artful forest of signs. In 2008, the Sign Post Forest had as many as 65,000 signs, and they are growing annually by 4,000.
