It is of great concern that global warming is melting away the icy habitats where polar bears live! Amid these concerns, the federal government is reviewing whether they should be considered a threatened species.

Protection may be warranted under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service informed. And it began a review process to consider if the bears should be listed. During the next 60 days, the agency will seek information about population distribution, habitat, and effects of climate change on the bears and their prey, potential threats from development, contaminants and poaching.

After the Center for Biological Diversity of Joshua Tree, Calif., filed a petition last year, the decision followed. Since their sea ice habitat is melting away, polar bears could become extinct by the end of the century, the Centre said.
