Shape-shifting tire made from recyclable material suits all road conditions

A Brazilian professor of industrial design Osmar Vencente Rodriguez seems to have found a solution to the uncanny road conditions. No, he doesn’t wish to alter the road-construction practices. Rather, what he hinges on is an improved tire design dubbed as Pumplon since it mimics a pumpkin or a melon. So, when you expose your car to some harsh road conditions, the tire made from a recyclable thermoplastic flattens or inflates automatically.

A steel shaft basing itself on a rotary mechanism senses all, be them the wet roads, muddy roadways, flooded tracks or a well-maintained highway. When you’re driving through a muddy lane, the tire widens itself for a firmer grip on the road. Conversely, if it’s a wet road, the tire narrows down to increase contact pressure. Therefore, it reduces travel time, soil compaction and also saves 30% of vehicle fuel.

Expressly designed for a patent-pending doctoral project for the Royal College of Art in London, the tire prototype will be unveiled next year hopefully.
