Scottsdale resident creates 900-pound artistic sphere from recycled wood

Wood recycling is nothing new, but applying it to create artistic objects sure deserves attention. Mitch Fry, a Scottsdale resident, along with his son did just the same in making an 8-foot diameter, 900-pound sphere from recycled wood. The duo has won a grant of $1,500 from the Contemporary Forum and next May they will exhibit their project at the Phoenix Art Museum.

The recession came as a boon for the ASU graduate, as he could devote more time to his project. Mitch’s son Kenneth used to drag the logs into the workshop from the trucking company next door. Kenneth also assisted his father in cutting the logs into small blocks. The actual construction of the sphere involved meticulous calculations to maintain uniformity of design through each added layer. Now, Mitch looks forward to oiling the pieces to make the blocks look more appealing.
