Some encouraging words of inspiration can actually work miracles. That is what came about at Horizons Elementary School, where kids were asked to portray themselves in creations made from scrap. Amanda Lang, art teacher and a huge fan of artist Diane Kurzyna aka Ruby Re-Usable, asked students to think about the ways of reusing trash generated at home. The recycled trash included duct tapes, lone socks, clean drink bottles and bags. Accordingly, kids came up with stunning self-portraits tagged with a poem that describes them best.

A $1,000 North Thurston Multicultural Advisory Council grant enabled Lang to bring Kurzyna to Horizons. Kurzyna said:
There is no shortage of garbage. It’s important that the trash is generated by them and we’re using their garbage before it goes to waste.

The dolls will featured at Arts Walk, Lacey Fun Fair, and the North Thurston Diversity Festival later this year.
