School kids participated with absolute vigor and enthusiasm in the recently held solar-powered model car race at Case New Holland engineering company in Burr Ridge. At the competition, Jerling Junior High School Team from Orland Park stunned all with their fastest solar car that was simply better than the rest. The best design award went to George Washington Middle School for its solar car that incorporated ice cream cones. Argonne National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored the competition, which is also a part of the Chicago Regional Science Bowl.

As students were asked to build and design a working solar-powered model car, they included electrical motors and solar cells into each of their cars. The solar car competition instilled design expertise, organizational skills and a sense of teamwork into the participating students.
