SCAD student creates waterless sand-removal system using Astroturf and bamboo

Designed by Casper Krouse, a senior industrial design student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the system (pictured above) uses collected rainwater, a mat of bamboo poles and AstroTurf. The design-work is the part of a project that asks students to suggest ways to reduce the water usage and wastage on the Tybee beach.

The residents of the Tybee Island are determined to reduce their daily water consumption by 44,000 gallons as the Floridan aquifer has almost exhausted itself because of saltwater contamination and the inconsiderate attitude of the beach mongers toward water conservation. Consequently, the local government had to take stern action in turning the beach-side showers off. Anyhow, the design project has produced some great concepts and Casper’s sand-removal system is one of them.
