Rural African communities to get portable, solar-powered Internet café

portablesolarcafe 11

Last month we let you know about Voices of Africa for Sustainable Development (VOA4SD) installing Kenya’s first rural internet kiosk in the South Coast that runs on solar power. Now extending the green endeavor a little further, another IT focused non-profit Computer Aid International has installed a new solar-powered Internet café in Macha, Zambia.

The café houses itself within a standard 20-foot shipping container and is topped with solar panel roofing. Featuring a standard Pentium 4 PC, it’s a full computer set up with a network of eleven workstations. The perfectly shippable prototype can be assembled quickly almost anywhere, and offers a convenient connection to the Internet through Africa’s largest rural wi-fi network. The concept may be of tremendous use in emergency relief, schools, rural hospitals, or MPs dealing with their local constituents.
