Rochester Earth House heads to Haiti for disaster relief

We have been discussing some viable rehabilitation solutions for the earthquake-stricken Haiti even since the tremor hit it with all its might. Now this time, we have a Rochester-based students’ team from the Freedom School, which is building an eco dome, and five 12-foot emergency shelters with kitchens and bathrooms for disaster relief. A chain of such houses, dubbed as Earth House, will stretch across a 10 acres site – allotted in Cabaret, Haiti – to house 5,000 people in all.

Though the houses will be made from sandbags and dirt for its major part, they promise to be clean inside. Brother Ron Jurgensen, construction manager for the project, says…

An entry niche, as we call it, goes into a main dome area, which is like the living area. Then off of that, a sleeping niche, a full kitchen, a full bath, and what we call an energy tower.

As 13WHAM.com puts it, the teams will head to Haiti next month and will put up some of these structures there.
