Roane County couple reduces their carbon footprint with solar-powered home

An eco-conscious couple in Roane County, West Virginia, has built a green house to reduce their carbon footprint. Mary Wildfire and Don Alexander’s 1,400-square-foot octagon-shaped home is located at the end of a mile-long stretch of dirt road just outside Spencer. The structure uses the energy produced by the four 220-watt solar panels installed in the front lawn. It has running water, a fireplace, Netflix movies, a satellite dish and laptop computers.

The couple avoids air conditioning, electric heating and big outdoor lights and recommends the same to others. An energy-efficient refrigerator saves energy, and its efficiency will be further increased by installing more insulation. All the appliances that are not in use are unplugged to avoid power usage. Wildfire is aware of the ill effects caused by using coal and this was one of the reasons why she choose Roane County for their home, as there are no mining operations around. They also bought a device called a Kill-A-Watt to keep a check on their energy consumption. The eco-friendly house cost them nearly $9,076.
