Michael Haas and his colleagues conducted a study and they have concluded that butter could be a feedstock for biodiesel production. If biodiesel is produced this way, it will help the U.S. meet the target of producing 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022.

The scientists converted the fat derived from a quarter-ton of butter into fatty acid esters that constitute biodiesel. The resulting material met all official test standards for biodiesel. When further purified or blended with biodiesel from other feedstocks, you would see the butter biodiesel being used to fly airplanes or run vehicles in near future.
