Researchers find a way to convert waste body heat into power

Researchers at the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre in Belgium have developed a unique device, which can harvest the waste heat from human bodies and converts it into usable power for ultra low power devices. According to Vladimir Leonov and Ruud Vullers our body produces nearly the same amount of heat, as dissipated by laptops and this heat is dissolute as heat flows from the skin. In order to utilize this heat in a useful manner, the duo has come up with a headband to harvest wasted heat.

The pioneering technology behind this clunky energy harvesting device is something called thermopiles. Thermopiles can convert the temperature difference between our skin and the surrounding environment, into electricity. The electricity produced is enough to power ultra low power devices. As of now, the technology has been proven to power a medical sensor, but if they are capable of powering your iPod or mobile phone is yet to be seen. Although, works on developing the energy harvesting device are in full swing, but we will have to wait a little for it to hit market.
