South Jersey Healthcare has made a place in many hearts for serving humanity as well as the environment. The hospital system is doing its bit for the planet by implementing a “recycle everything” policy. The staff is seen recycling or reusing everything from computers to blood pressure cuffs to medication bottles. The hospital received a state award for the policy that helped it increase recycled materials by 120 percent in October.

The “recycle everything” policy that started by a simple addition of blue recycling bins to every floor in the lobbies and the staff's break and meeting rooms has now taken the shape of a revolution. South Jersey Healthcare, which has the Regional Medical Center in Vineland, Bridgeton Health Center, Elmer Hospital and smaller inpatient/outpatient facilities to its name, has already saved some $60,000 on disposal costs from 2005 to 2008 because of its recycling efforts.
The various departments have also taken up individual recycling projects to make a greener environment. The Regional Medical Center's pharmacy started recycling medication bottles, while the nursery recycles baby bottles and the maintenance staff recycles unused scrap metal. South Jersey Healthcare prevents universal waste like parts of computers, batteries, waste oil and other items from entering landfills.
