A new solar plant project in California is probably going to dwarf all the existing solar plants in US. A San Francisco based company called Cleantech America LLC will be creating a mega solar plant in Fresno, California.
The 80-megawatt farm is to occupy as much as 640 acres (260 hectares). When completed (sometime in 2011) the new plant will be 17 times bigger than the largest US solar plant. I think Discovery should definitely air the construction of this plant in it’s show ‘Mega structures’. The project sounds really big. Huge would probably be the right word for it.
Currently the need for renewable energy is ever increasing. With the sources of electricity reducing day by day, Sun is going to be our ultimate source of power from now on.
Advantages of this megastructure:
A massive project like this is going to bring a sweeping change in the California state industrial sector. With this plant in place, more companies will hopefully invest in the Fresno region.
The biggest advantage of Solar energy is the fact that its is clean unlike gas fired electrical plants. There are absolutely no smokes and sparks involved in the solar power plant. Solar energy is probably the greenest form of energy existing today.
Also, the creation of this plant means a creation of about 1040 jobs in the Fresno region. This should give the region an economic boost as well.
Environmentalists and scientists predict that a solar power plant would have a positive impact on the pollution factor. The effect will be similar to keeping 20,000 vehicles off the roads ( reduction in pollution levels).
Perspectives on this project
Cleantech plans on selling this solar power to about 21000 California homes mostly in and around Kings river Conservation district.
There’s plenty to be done yet. The pilot project is still in the planning stage. According to the higher-ups in the Cleantech company, many details still need to be worked out.
The CEO of Cleantech LLC Bill Barnes, agrees that plants like these will be the ‘waves of the future’.
We think it’s the wave of the future. This scale of project, I think, creates a tipping point for renewable energy
If anything, this project will reduce the load on the power plants and generate more electricity in the Fresno region. I think this is a great endeavor undertaken by the Cleantech and should hopefully turn out to be beneficial.
