White rhinos are at the brink of extinction and on June 6 their number went down when the remaining two white rhinos, in Zambia were attacked by poachers. The night operation killed one and injured the other at the Mosi-Oa-Tunya national park in Livingstone. The dead rhino was a female and was apparently killed for her horn. The injured rhino that was shot by bullets is now undergoing treatment.

The shooting took place in the zoological park that is well guarded against poachers, near Victoria Falls.

Maureen Mwape spokesperson of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has confirmed the shooting and soon (ZAWA) will begin with investigations of the shooting.

Zambia's all white rhinos were killed by poachers. Later on the government managed to acquire six rhinos from South Africa in the year 1993. Now the male, which is injured and undergoing treatment, is the last to survive.
