People of Australia can make a significant contribution for the cause of environment by participating in the 'Old phones, more trees' campaign being run by Mobile Muster and Landcare Australia. All they have to do is to donate their old mobile phones. The campaign aims to collect 250,000 used mobile phones by September 30 which will then be recycled and the money obtained by selling the recycled goods will be used by 25 Landcare and Coastalcare volunteer groups for planting more than 25,000 trees across along the coastline.

Australia is famous for its coastline spread over 16,000 miles and most of its cities are based on the coasts. However, most of these coasts are vulnerable to the dangers emanating from global warming. Experts believe that rising sea-levels will submerge many of the coastal cities. The dangers are also there because most of the Australian coasts are based on sandstone, which is prone to erosion if sufficient resistance is not provided to the incoming sea-tides. Heavy plantation across the sea coasts can be one of the option for avoiding the dangers.

In the above context, this campaign has made significant contribution towards restoring the iconic coastlines of Australia since 2007. So far, the organizers have collected more than 149,000 kilograms of mobile phones and related accessories which were recycled and used for planting over 255,000 trees across the country. This year the campaign was launched on the World Environment day on June 5. It is expected that about 48,000 aluminum cans and over 2,400 plastic fences could be produced by recycling 250,000 old mobiles and their accessories that the campaign organizers are aiming to collect this year.

For participating in this campaign, anyone can send their old or broken mobile phones along with related accessories free of cost. For, this they can use a free post reply paid mailing label. There are also 3,500 Mobile Muster collection centers spread all over the country where people can drop their used mobile phones. The purpose behind this campaign is not only for maintaining the coastlines but also from saving the used and broken phones from ending up in landfills. And, also, for using the old phones for a better purpose.
