Making a major move to replace surplus parking meters and constructing bike parking for commuters, the city of Ottawa will substitute no less than 4,000 coin-operated meters with 600 solar-powered pay and display units, and will retrofit the discarded meters with bars for using them as bike racks. The remaining 3,500 meters will be soon sold or recycled; none will go to landfills for sure.

Doug Robertson, Ottawa parking operations manager, says…
We can sell them to suppliers who want to refurbish them and resell them to other municipalities. If necessary, we will talk about recycling the metal from the post. Selling them to a scrap dealer would be absolutely the last possible use for them.
The city will soon set up the new pay and display meter.
