Organic farming 'could feed Africa'

Organic farming is the new ray of hope for Africa, for overcoming its decade long problems of poverty and malnutrition. Organic farming, as we all are familiar, is a type of farming which relies on crop rotation, green manure, etc. to maintain the soil productivity and control pests. Poverty in Africa is predominantly rural. Almost 70 per cent of the poor people live in rural areas and agriculture is their only source of livelihood, yet the development assistant to agriculture is decreasing.

Organic practices can boost the income of the poor African farmers by increasing the yield and improving soil fertility, without harming nature. The head of the UN’s Environment Programme, Achim Ateinr quoted:

“The potential contribution of organic farming to feeding the world maybe far higher than many had supposed".

Learning to practice organic farming can help in spreading awareness about the environment and of ways to protect it. Organic farming is the way forward for a modernized and better lifestyle for the poor people of Africa.
